J&K Urban Local Bodies, is the application of concept of civic
bodies at grass root level in urban areas for creating people
participation in improving and achieving the objectives of
sanitation, Solid Waste management, checking of adulteration in
food items and other civic amenities/ services by way of
exploration and utilization of available resources at local
level.
As per the J&K Municipal Act 2000, the Municipal
Council/Committee is mandated to perform the following duties:-
i.
Preparation of plans for
economic development and social justice;
ii.
Performance of functions
and implementation of the schemes, which may be entrusted to
them including following:-
a)
Urban Planning including town planning;
b)
Regulation of land – use and construction
of Buildings;
c)
Public Heath, Sanitation, Conservancy and
Solid Waste Management;
d)
Urban Forestry, Protection of Environment
and promotion of ecological aspects;
e)
Safeguarding interests of weaker sections
of the society;
f)
Slum improvement and up-gradation;
g)
Provisions of Urban amenities and
facilities such as parks, play grounds and gardens;
h)
Promotion of cultural, Educational and
aesthetic aspects;
i)
Burials and burial grounds, cremation and
cremational grounds;
j)
Cattle ponds and prevention of cruelty to
animals;
k)
Urban poverty alleviation;
l)
Vital Statistics including registration of
Births, Deaths;
m)
Planning for economic and social
development;
n)
Regulation of slaughter houses and
tanneries;
o)
Regulation of amenities including street
lighting, parking lots, Bus stops and public conveniences;
p)
implementation of Food Adulteration Act;
